Benefits of Isle of Man aircraft registration

On 1 May 2007 the Isle of Man Government launched its Aircraft Register for private and corporate aircraft, including helicopters and very light jet aircraft (VLJs). Such aircraft are proving increasingly popular in the modern world of private and business travel as people try to avoid the inconvenience of delays and security checks experienced in traditional air travel.

The legislation used in the Aircraft Register has been based primarily on that of the United Kingdom albeit with certain favourable modifications specific to the Isle of Man.

The Aircraft Register is expected to mirror the success and reputation already enjoyed by the Isle of Man Ship Registry.

Ownership in an appropriate vehicle, such as an Isle of Man company or a purpose trust, coupled with the significant tax advantages available in the offshore environment, make the Isle of Man a natural choice for registration and administration of private and corporate aircraft. Other major benefits include:

  • The first dedicated corporate aircraft register service in a European time zone
  • Familiar and proven legislation based on that in the UK
  • More user friendly and less bureaucratic service than other jurisdictions, provided by a highly experienced local team
  • Choice of registration using Isle of Man specific "M-plus four letters". prefix, which can be transferred on to subsequent aircraft
  • Political neutrality of the "M" prefix which may be preferable to other less anonymous prefixes
  • Use of the Isle of Man mortgage register which can be available 24 hours a day by prior arrangement
  • Extremely competitive scale of charges based on fact that the Aircraft Registry is not intended to be profit making
  • The Register will accept several internationally recognised aircraft crew licences.
